Sifu Wayne
Martial Artist. Author. Educator.

Sifu Wayne Belonoha has spent more than four decades in martial arts and more than three decades in the Moy Yat-Ip Man Wing Chun lineage. His career has included teaching, writing, competition, judging, organizational leadership, professional education, consulting, photography and international work. At the center of his story, however, is his Sifu, Grandmaster Sunny Tang, and the kung fu family that Sunny Tang opened to him.
Standing On The Shoulders of Giants
A lifetime shaped by teachers and opportunity.

Wayne began martial arts practice in 1979. His early years exposed him to several martial arts before Wing Chun became his life's work. In 1993, he began studying Moy Yat Ving Tsun under Grandmaster Sunny Tang, a senior disciple of Grandmaster Moy Yat in the Ip Man lineage.
That relationship gave Wayne more than techniques. It gave him a teacher, a lineage and a standard against which his own understanding could continue to be tested.
The Sifu Who Opens Doors
A tradition of teachers giving more than lessons.

Wayne attributes his success to Grandmaster Sunny Tang. Sunny Tang taught him directly, supervised his development as a teacher and brought him into a wider kung fu family.
Through his Sifu, Wayne had opportunities to meet, practice with, exchange ideas with and observe respected sifus, grandmasters and lineage holders. One lesson repeated across those encounters: at high levels, skill tends toward efficiency, economy and simplicity. Honoring his Sifu now means helping the next generation benefit from the same kind of access.
From Student To Teacher
Teaching became a responsibility.

Wayne began teaching under Grandmaster Sunny Tang's supervision and later became his disciple and lineage representative. Teaching forced a new question: not simply whether he could perform a skill, but whether he could explain it, organize it and reproduce understanding in someone else.
That same relationship continues with Wai's instructors today. As they advance, Wayne's role increasingly shifts from teaching rules to mentoring judgment, refinement and responsible independence - much as an elite athlete or senior executive can still benefit from an experienced coach.
Organizing The System
Make the path clear without making it shallow.

Wing Chun is full of small details, repeated principles and lessons whose meaning changes as the student develops. Wayne's answer was not to remove depth, but to organize the depth so students could navigate it.
That work grew into books, articles, video instruction and the 108-step curriculum used to connect the different domains of the system. Specific problems can still be addressed directly, but the solution is taught in a way that supports the larger system rather than creating gaps that appear later.

Professional Educator & Systems Builder
Decades of teaching, consulting and improving complex systems.

Before turning his full-time attention to kung fu, Wayne built a professional career in consulting, project management, organizational improvement and adult education. He worked with major organizations across finance, energy, government, technology and industry, led a team of roughly 80 professionals, and taught management and leadership through institutions and professional organizations including Humber, Boston University, IBM and the Project Management Institute.
That background influences Wai's directly: define the outcome, remove wasted effort, preserve quality and explain difficult material clearly. The goal is not to make Ving Tsun simplistic, but to make a complex system easier to learn without losing the relationships that make it complete.
Author & Documentarian
Preserving knowledge in forms students can return to.

Wai's connects five schools across Canada, the United States and China through a shared curriculum and continuing instructor development. Different locations can have different schedules and local needs while remaining part of one connected organization.
Practical Experience
Tested outside the practice floor.

Wayne does not present his background as military, police or executive protection. His practical experience came in part from three years working overnight security at a small-town racetrack in the 1980s and 1990s, where alcohol, drugs, rivalries and improvised weapons could make conflict unpredictable.
That experience reinforced a simple lesson: immediate solutions matter, but they need to fit inside a broader understanding. A quick answer that works in one moment can create new problems elsewhere if it depends too heavily on size, speed, power or circumstance. Wai's therefore teaches practical problem-solving in a way that remains consistent with the complete system.

Beyond The School
Competition, judging, performance and international service.

Wayne's Wing Chun life has extended far beyond his own school. He became a Pan-American triple gold medalist in Wing Chun competition, served as an international judge and standards consultant, taught an International Wushu Federation Wing Chun judge-training course in China, judged the 2018 World Wing Chun Open in Foshan, and coached students and teams in national and international events.
He has also been invited to perform for Queen Elizabeth II, at the opening of the Ip Man Hall in Foshan and at the opening of Bruce Lee Paradise in Shunde, and has appeared extensively in martial-arts print, video and live events. Those experiences matter not because every student needs to compete or perform, but because they exposed his ideas to different people, pressures and standards.

What He Passes Forward
Preserve the depth. Make the path clear.

Across his books, courses and schools, Wayne's goal has remained consistent: preserve the depth of Ip Man Wing Chun while giving students a clear, practical path into it - from useful skill today to deeper understanding, and for those who choose it, the ability to teach and eventually lead a school of their own.
He credits his own Sifu and kung fu family for opportunities that changed his life. Wai's exists in part to make sure the next generation receives the same kind of access - to knowledge, teachers, training partners, continued mentorship and a tradition worth carrying forward.
